“In front of Saint Alban’s Episcopal Church in North Carolina, there is a statue of Jesus wrapped up in a blanket, homeless and covered in scars. When the status was first added to the property, it received backlash from the wealthy community it resided in. One woman called the police on the “vagrant” that was loitering.”
With this anecdote, Victoria Post opens up an impassioned essay depicting the controversy around, and lack of compassion for, the plight of the homeless community. As a runner-up in our Fall Student Voices scholarship contest, Victoria shares the importance of humanizing and fostering discussions with the homeless as we provide job training and understanding for their struggles.
